Digital Twins
A digital twin is a digital representation of a physical object, person, or process, contextualized in a digital version of its environment. Digital twins can help an organization simulate real situations and their outcomes, ultimately allowing it to make better decisions.
Digital Twin Example in Manufacturing- IntelligentEngine by Rolls-Royce. Rolls-Royce uses digital twins for their "IntelligentEngine" program. The program creates digital twins for each engine they produce. In doing so, they can gather data across more than a dozen parameters from onboard sensors.
Why is digital twins important?
Digital twins offer the insights necessary to gain those operational efficiencies across the value chain. With process-based digital twins, for example, organizations can bring together different data sets to capture real-time information on asset and production performance.
The creation of a digital twin involves a cohesive system of hardware and software components, with middleware serving as the bridge for data management. The digital twin system comprises three main components: hardware, data management middleware, and software.
The four identified features for digital twins in manufacturing are: ( i ) the digital modeling feature, ( ii ) the analytics support feature, ( iii ) the timeliness update feature, and ( iv ) the control feature.
In characterising the Digital Twin, the state of the concept, key terminology, and associated processes are identified, discussed, and consolidated to produce 13 characteristics (Physical Entity/Twin; Virtual Entity/Twin; Physical Environment; Virtual Environment; State; Realisation; Metrology; Twinning; Twinning Rate;
